The annual ornamental grasses are usually grown for their seed panicles—flowers are there but they are minute and hardly notice¬able—many of which dry beautifully for winter bouquets. Leaves of these grasses are usually not too showy. The perennials have magnificent and varied foliage, with all shades of green, blue, and variegations of cream, white, gold, or a host of tans, in addition to notable seed heads. Feathertop grass (Pennisetum villosum) grows between 2 and 3 feet tall and is an annual in the North, perennial in the South. It's often termed Pennisetum longistylum in catalogs. The grass is rather sloppy in appearance, for the magnificent flowers become quite heavy. If picked before they open entirely they can be dried but they shatter with the slightest bump.
